Virtual Presentation Event 2020 Awards

Congratulations from the Committee

Dear RoboCuppers,

First and foremost, we would like to congratulate all the teams that submitted their presentations. Upon evaluating the presentations, we were amazed to see teams around the world working on a common challenge but tackling it from various directions - each team with a different focus. We were also glad to see a wide spectrum of teams, from those that only started RCJ Rescue quite recently to participants in past international competitions. Keep up the great work!

Although videos are different to seeing robots at competitions and talking directly to teams, we hope these presentations serve as a collection of resources for everyone to learn and gain inspiration for future robotic developments.

Following the evaluations, we have decided to award a number of teams that excelled in the following categories: team spirit, hardware innovation, strategy and software innovation, presentation, and overall. While the awarded teams have presented a high standard, it must be noted that there were many close calls during the decision process. So we strongly encourage everyone to browse through all the presentations.

Best Team Spirit Award

Defenders
 Defenders - RoboCUP 2020 Maze
 The reasons for the award

Best team spirit is awarded to team Defenders for a clear demonstration of their teamwork, distinct separation of technical roles, and how each member learned new skills and overcame their problems. The team’s use of technical solutions throughout the video to continue their work during the lockdown should also be highlighted.

 The reasons for the award

Best team spirit is awarded to team Robeco for their focus on teamwork, energy, and desire to achieve the ends despite hurdles from multiple dimensions. They demonstrated the spirit to continue their learning and innovations during tough situations to make progress and gather resources.

Best Hardware Innovation Award

Školska Knjiga CRO Team
 Školska Knjiga CRO Team Line
 The reasons for the award

Best hardware innovation is awarded to Školska Knjiga CRO Team for their impressive custom built hardware. The team goes into details on both components they used and the hardware development over the year to innovate upon their previous year, such as the development of custom PCBs and incorporating cameras. Upon the innovations, the team demonstrated the hardware does indeed function very well in the rescue line challenge.

Best Strategy and Software Innovation Award

 Team MK Maze
 The reasons for the award

Best strategy and software innovation is awarded to team MK for presenting working solutions and innovations of a high standard. The video starts off with a video of a full run of their previous robot showing a near complete solution to rescue maze, demonstrating the team's technical capabilities. The team then explains innovations on their team’s robot such as investigating uses of lidars, ROS, and strategic hardware changes to solve the previous robot’s shortcomings.

N.E.R.D.
 Team N.E.R.D. - 2020 RCJ Rescue Line Documentation Video Line
 The reasons for the award

Best presentation is awarded to team N.E.R.D. for the informative and entertaining video. Throughout the video, diagrams, simple animations, and videos were used to clearly describe their learning process. Put together with the articulated audio explanations, it brought a pleasant tone throughout that it invites the viewer to play the video again. Their team website shared valuable documentation too.

N.E.R.D.
 Team N.E.R.D. - 2020 RCJ Rescue Line Documentation Video Line
 The reasons for the award

Best overall is awarded to team N.E.R.D. for the combination of innovative hardware and software development put together with excellent presentation. The team presents a thorough explanation of how and why certain components were used, especially the extensive use of their camera. The video put together with additional information on the website serves as a great resource for other teams to learn and replicate in the future.

About the certificate

Congratulations to all the winners. The certificate will be sent to the registered contact person by email within a few days.

These certificates, although you should be proud of, are not endorsed by the RoboCup Federation. That is, the certificates are produced and endorsed by the RoboCupJunior Rescue Technical and Organisational Committee (TC and OC) but not RoboCupJunior or RoboCup; and should keep this in mind when referring them to a certificates publicly or a third party.
